laptop computers for kids

Technology has changed the face of education, and today’s children are way more proficient with tech than we were back in the day. Laptops and tablets are essential in modern education, so your child will need a reliable (and preferably affordable) device when they start school. Here, the main question is which laptop to buy? Mac is sturdy and reliable, but quite pricey. Windows-operated laptops are more affordable but come with a catch — expensive software. Fortunately, Chromebook for kids offers an outstanding balance between quality and affordability.

A Chromebook is a laptop or a tablet that runs on Chrome Operating System. The system is very intuitive to figure out, is user-friendly, and, above all, free. The same is true for the software your kids will use. Google docs are 100% free, nice to use, and they do not overload the operational system because all data is stored in the cloud. And the best part is, one can get the best affordable Chromebook for around $300, even though there will also be pricier and cheaper models. On the whole, this device is perfect for kids because it has everything they need for education.

Of course, as a parent, you may not be familiar with Google Chromebook for kids. So, we have created this list of the best models to suit any budget and personal preference. Read on to find the best device for your kid’s school days.

Buyer’s Guide: Tech Aspects to Consider When Shopping

If you are not into tech and gadgets, choosing the best Chromebook for kids may still be a challenge. So, let’s take a quick look at the most important tech features and explain what they are responsible for. Hopefully, they will make your buying journey easier.

  • Display size: Most models on our list come with 11- or 11.6-inch screens. This is not much but enough for studies and videos. If you are interested in a long-term investment, consider going with a larger screen.
  • Battery life: Your kid will not always have access to power, so the more your battery lasts, the better. Still, a more powerful battery makes the device heavier. So, if your child is in elementary school, you may want to sacrifice battery life for lighter weight.
  • touch screen laptop for kids
  • RAM and internal storage: RAM is responsible for how quickly a device can perform operations (and how many it can have in the background). For something more complex, 4 GB RAM should suffice. For simple operators (working in Google docs), 2 GB is enough. As for internal storage, it all depends on how many files you would like to keep in your offline drive. Some laptops on our list have as little as 4GB storage, while other up to 64 GB. Obviously, more is better if you want to have offline access to some most important files. But once again, a more spacious drive is pricier, so balance wisely.
  • Protection features: Even an adult would appreciate a spill-protected keyboard, but for some children, this little feature is simply a must. On the whole, it is always better to be extra-cautious — better than paying for pricey repairs or getting a new laptop altogether.
  • Touch screen & convertibility: If you are interested in a model that converts to tablet mode, a touch screen is a must. When looking for a more traditional laptop with a 180 (or less) degree hinge, investing in a touch screen is a waste of money — such construction would not be user-friendly or ergonomic.
  • Connectivity: Newer Wi-Fi hardware ensures a safer and more reliable connection. Bluetooth is optional for kids’ studies but can still prove handy if your headsets are Bluetooth-wired.
  • Webcam and speakers: Today, a lot of lessons happen online, so a webcam is one of the essentials when choosing gadgets for kids. If you do not want your child to wear a headset all the time, investing in quality speakers is also a good idea.

Our Recommendation for 2021

With so many amazing options on our review lists, one can hardly point out the best of the best. Your end choice should depend on the functionality you and your kids are looking for. On the whole, it would be a good idea to invest in one of the Dell models because this manufacturer has a solid reputation and is known for the amazing quality of its products. Besides, Dell Inspiron 11, ChromeBook 11.6 Inch HD, as well as their traditional laptop version have room for growth because each of these devices can support online games and watching video. When looking for extra protection from spills, Acer Chromebook Spin 11 or ASUS Chromebook C202 are a safer choice when it comes to quality Chromebooks for kids.

  • I bought an Acer Chromebook R11 for my 7-year-old daughter several months ago as a birthday gift. It turned out that this chromebook is just great for elementary students. It’s pretty powerful, and can work in two modes (laptop or tablet). But at the same time it’s lightweight and compact, making it convenient to carry in the backpack and work at lessons. I definitely recommend it for kids!

  • I must admit, I love the Chromebook that I got due to your reviews. I personally bought Lenovo. It’s FAR from being only Chromebook for kindergarten!! It’s light and portable! You can take it while travelling for work. It’s a nice thing for internet searching, watching YouTube, or working with docs or google.

  • I like the way the world pushes the industry under technologies. Chromebooks are different from usual laptops, but it’s not that bad. They are great for kindergarten students. You can use it either for work or studies. Those who say they are not user-friendly just do not know how to use them correctly🤦🏻‍♀️. They are provided at super costs. 10/10
